Many Dentists are confused about whether they need a Practice Manager or not!

I used to believe that most dental practices did not need a Practice Manager, even though for many years I was a Practice Manager.

Surely, if you have a great team who are fully trained in their roles, know what they are doing, and are achieving what they set out to do, then why do you need someone to manage them?

But over the years, the more dental practices I work with, the more I am noticing a point of difference which I cannot ignore any more.

The Dental Practices that are flourishing have an amazing Practice Manager driving the practice in the right direction, at the right speed making sure the whole team are following the road rules!

But I do also see practices with the WRONG Practice Manager, who is driving the practice in wrong direction and causing big problems.

So how do you find the right Practice Manager and what are the qualities of an amazing Practice Manager.

Well let’s start with the definition of a Dental Practice Manager:

A person who manages a Dental Practice.

Okay I know that was no help!

Here is a definition I found: A Practice Manager is responsible for hiring new staff, negotiating employee benefits, developing personnel policies, resolving labor conflicts, maintaining equipment, ordering medical supplies, ensuring compliance with all government guidelines, guaranteeing medical records are stored properly and the list goes on…….

Here is another one: Maintaining a hardworking, productive and effective workforce, a team that gets great results. Having a good relationship with staff that’s based on trust and engagement. The level of communication is very good, the manager knows what’s going on, when, where and why.

I am drawn to the definition that says, “Having a good relationship with staff that’s based on trust and engagement.”

I am immediately thinking about some of the Practice Managers I am working with right now.

They are well respected by her peers, they are not push overs and they are always ready to help the team take action and achieve.

These Practice Managers sort out the people not willing to contribute and do what they need to do to help grow the business and help patients.

Trust and engagement is so important to get right when you are a Practice Manager. You want to understand the perspective of others while always being focused on the good of the dental practice.

A Good Practice Manager helps gets results for the Practice.

Yes, I love this.

A Good Practice Manager is held accountable for the Practice Results by ensuring everyone on the team is getting results.

A Good Practice Manager is making sure everything is working like clockwork and the people they work with know what they are doing.

Most office tasks can be delegated to the team and the Practice Manager ensures everything is completed.

One of the best reasons to have a Practice Manager is that it takes the stress away from the dentist/business owner to oversee the daily activities of the team.

Dentists are busy enough during the day, so having someone they can place in a supervising and managing role, frees them up to do what they do best, Dentistry.

I have seen team members successfully take on a Practice Managers Role after working as part of the team.

Practice Management is a leadership role and requires quick independent thinking and decision making, the ability to give clear directions that are followed by the team and be able to have discussions with teams that they may not always like to have.

A Good Practice Manager should be agreeable, fair, confident, friendly, and tolerant just to name a few qualities.

I see the Practice Manager as the “glue that holds the practice together.”

I hear many team members wishing they had a “go to person” because their dentist is too busy to deal with what comes up each day.

A Good Practice Manager is the “go to person”.

The person you can trust.

The person you know will help you find a solution.

The person who will stand by you and be fair.

The person who will never lose sight of what is best for the practice and the patients.

The person you can depend on no matter what.

If I have just described the person who is your Practice Manager, then you are very fortunate and you should cherish them.

If you have been looking for a Good Practice Manager, then do it.

Choose carefully.

There are some amazing people out there ready to take on the Practice Managers Role and shine at YOUR Practice.
