Start by building personal connections with your patient on the phone and in the dental chair over time.

Stop diving straight into the clinical discussion.

Dental Jargon

Your patient easily becomes confused when you start using dental jargon in your discussions with them.

Dental Jargon or Dental terminology is what you know, but most patients do not!

I know there are times when using dental terminology is impressive and good to show your patients that you are an authority in dentistry.

But if it starts to confuse your patient it’s time to stop.

You know when this has happened with a patient as their face glazes over and they stare at your blankly!

I know this sounds awful, but you do need to dumb it down, so everyone knows what is going on.

Does you patient really know that the tooth is 23 or what a dry socket is?

When you are able to speak to your patients on a level that they fully understand this is when they see the value, importance and urgency of their treatment and care and are more likely to say yes to getting started.

A Confused Patient

A confused patient is one that is very unlikely to go ahead with any treatment that is recommended.

Have a good think right now if you are guilty of confusing your patients.

Which words could you switch out for something your patient understands?

It is always a good idea to check your patient has understood what you have said.

There is nothing worse than a patient leaving your practice, confused even if they did schedule appointments.

This soon leads to patients having second thoughts and cancelling appointments.
