I was walking down George Street Sydney with throngs of people who had emerged out of an office building wanting to catch a glimpse of some lunchtime sunshine and a bite to eat.

I crossed the street and on either side of the pathway were two fit looking people wearing sports gear, giving out one day membership cards for people to come and check out their gym.

As I approached them they ignored me as I walked past. I was not too sure whether to feel disappointed or flattered that they didn’t stop me and give me a card.

Why didn’t they give me a free membership card? What was so different about me compared to those they stopped?

My curiosity got the better of me.

I walked back and asked them why.

The fit gym person said, “I just know when someone is going to say No.”


This gym person must be a genius.

He must have special mind reading powers.

How does he really know if someone will say Yes or No?

Unless someone says NO to you, they have not said NO.

Everyone should be given the opportunity to say YES! You never know whether someone will say YES unless you ask them.

I wonder how many other people had been prejudged and not had the opportunity to say Yes?

You get into the heads of your patients and decide what you believe to be what they want and need.

You think your patient:

  • Can’t afford it
  • Has no money
  • Doesn’t want to do all of the treatment now.
  • Is too old or too young
  • Is scared
  • Won’t get much back from their Health Fund so they won’t want to go ahead with treatment.
  • Won’t have time.

You guess!

Like the gym people in George Street who have had so many people say NO, you start to think that other patients will be the same and will also say NO to you!

The golden rule to follow in your Dental Office is to NEVER believe your patient will say No to treatment until they tell you so.

Give ALL your patients the opportunity to say YES!

And even when your patients say no to the treatment they need and should have, you still have an opportunity to change their mind.
