We have all been in this situation at some point in our lives, where we didn’t really know what to do, so we made it up as we went along.
The problem with this strategy is that most of the time we get it wrong.
Having the required skills will always lead you to being way more successful in what you are doing.
A Dental Practice is no exception to this.
Just imagine if you had not learned the skills needed to successfully do dentistry you would be in big trouble by now and many of your patients would be quite concerned.
Imagine if your Dental Assistant didn’t know how to assist you correctly in the treatment room with your patient. There would be chaos, confusion and maybe lots of tears from both your patient and your Dental Assistant and maybe even from you the Dentist.
But the good news is this doesn’t happen, well not usually.
You as a Dentist know how to diagnose and treat your patients because you have highly effective skills that enable you to be competent, and maybe even an excellent communicator.
Your Dental Assistants are fully trained or in training to have highly effective skills that enable them to assist you correctly and everyone is happy.
But what happens at the front office of your Dental Practice?
Does your Front Office Team receive the same training as you and your dental assistant?
For many Dental Practices, this is what happens. People who have worked in dental are hired and it is presumed they know everything about dental and have all the skills needed or people are hired, who have at least worked in an office and have some sort of customer service experience and people skills.
Then these people are put to task and thrown onto the phones immediately. How hard can it be!
The problem is that most of the time these people are hired and do not have the highly effective phone skills needed to get results.
Ask yourself these questions about the people answering your phones right now at your practice:
Do they know how to schedule appointments for New Patients who want to know how much its going to cost for 4 fillings, do you bulk bill, are you a preferred provider, how much will my health fund give me back, can I get an appointment today?
Do they know how to help a patient keep their appointment and stop accepting cancellations and moving patients all over the place?
Are they able to successfully follow up with patients where needed and schedule their outstanding treatment or overdue Hygiene Appointments?
Most of the time they are using the skill of “make it up as I go” or “I’ll just keep doing what I’ve always done even if it doesn’t get good results.”
Neither of these strategies are highly effective and will continue having a negative affect at your Dental Practice.
Let’s start changing things.
Why not look closely at your front office team and make sure, just like you, they also have highly effective skills especially their phone skills.
I’m sure by now you realise what a positive impact having a highly skilled person answering your phones, makes to your business.
