A great way to lose a prospective patient is to have a person answering your business phones with no training and skills.

This is a recipe for disaster.

It may not be obvious straight away, and the fall out is gradual, but eventually your practice numbers will show a low New Patient Conversion rate, patients not turning up for appointments and cancelling their appointments very easily, and patients not scheduling their next step in treatment and care.

This can all happen from simply having an unskilled person sitting at your front desk.

I see the team that work the front of room or front office of your dental practice, as the pilots of your aircraft.

They are scheduling appointments and controlling your appointment book each day so that everything runs smoothly and doesn’t crash and if a crash is about to happen they go into action and know how to save the day.

I want you to take a moment to think about whether your team are doing this at the front desk of your business.

When team members are not given the skills to learn and master than how can you ever expect them to perform to their full potential and deliver the results you are wanting.

I love the practices who have team development where they work on their mindset but once they return to a normal work-day where are the skills needed to put everything into action and utilise this clear head and excitement to get results?

Motivating your team is glorious but what are you specifically motivating them to do and what results do you expect?

Team Development is not development unless it has continuity and accountability rolled in there. I just don’t get these short spurts of motivation and learning that end up on a shelf as a distant memory of what was once done. I know from personal experience that this is never the way to learn.

Developing skills is all about knowing why you need specific skills, the desire to improve, learning the correct skills that will give you results, continuity of learning so it sticks like glue forever and accountability for your results, to keep you on your game at all times.

  • Know why you need certain skills
  • Desire to improve
  • Learning the correct skills to get you results
  • Continuity of learning to develop skills for the long term
  • Take action with the skills every day
  • Accountability for results

Know why you need certain skills:

If you are unclear as to why you need to learn something, then it is probably never going to stick. You just don’t get it. Knowing why you are doing something is where your motivation comes from. It also means whatever you are learning is going to be meaningful and you are more likely to take action over and over again!

Desire to improve:

Desire is always an interesting topic of discussion. Desire is “a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen.” This comes back to the type of people you hire in the first place to work with your team. I always say one of the hardest things to teach is attitude. If you can find a person who is curious, enthusiastic and has a positive attitude.

BINGO they are a keeper. The rest is relatively easy!

I have found the team members that show a high level of desire in their work, like where they work, like the people they work with and have a feeling of satisfaction in their work. A good dose of recognition works wonders. Tell your team and individuals what a great job they are doing. This goes a long way in helping your team want to do better.

Learning the correct skills to get you results:

When your team are learning and understand why they are developing skills, you want to make sure it is relevant to the end result, otherwise your team will just go through the motions to keep you happy and not ever understand.

I’ts also important to ensure everyone is on the same page. One observation I have made over the years I have been teaching and coaching, is when some people are doing their own thing then the team falls down and the results are never the same.

Continuity of learning to develop skills for the long term:

The concept of continuity of learning to ensure it sticks like glue and becomes part of the team’s daily habits, always fascinates me.

I see dental practices promoting continuity of care with their patients but not continuity of learning with their team. Remember the pilot analogy I shared with your earlier. These are the people responsible for NOT crashing your aircraft!

Setting aside regular times for team training is the gold. I wouldn’t be still coaching and training teams if I didn’t see the results and believe in it myself.

Continuity of learning WORKS. We build on what we have learned and continue to improve over time.

Take action with the skills every day:

This is the important part. The action each day is where the real learning begins. With no action, what has been learned can fade and disappear very quickly.

Taking action, is where you get to practice and perfect what you have learned. Part of learning and taking action, is getting it wrong. But getting it wrong is all part of learning as frustrating as it seems at the time.

Accountability for results:

Accountability is where responsibility starts. Everyone at the practice MUST have a level of accountability. Accountability keeps us all in check. It’s a fact that when you have a trainer at the gym you will get better results than if you were left to do your own things.

Giving your team responsibilities but follow it through and keep them accountable for what they are responsible for. Tracking and Measuring results is a great way for your team to keep a close eye on their results.

I see many dental practices shy away from setting up more individual responsibilities for their team and accountability. When you have the team members with a positive work attitude where they want to grow and develop their skills, they enjoy the accountability and are ready prove to you how good they are.

Have a good look at your team right now.

Are they ready for what you need them to do at your practice?

Are they missing the skills needed to do their job properly and get the results you expect?

Do you have team members with an excellent attitude, but they are still not giving you the results you want?

Wouldn’t you rather have a fully trained and ready team than one that is killing your business slowly but surely.
