Good manners never go out of fashion.
When was the last time you got in trouble for being polite and respectful to your patients?
Good manners in any business are part of how you build rapport and trust with customers, so they become lifelong customers.
But good manners are not quite as common as you think. Well, I’m sure you have worked this out for yourself.
Good manners set you apart from other dental practices.
Good manners are all about people, and when you make people the centre of your dental practice you are a winner!
Good manners in a dental practice are about the behaviour of you and your team as they interact with patients. You want good manners to be consistent amongst your team with everyone knowing what they are and being ready to deliver good manners.
Here is a list of 50 Good Manners to get you started:
Be early for work each day. Early is the new on time! Keep your mobile phone in your bag.
Respect your team members.
Clean up after yourself.
Avoid eating and drinking in front of patients.
Check your teeth after eating.
Greet every patient on arrival at the practice.
Beat your patient to the greet.
Stand up to greet your patient.
Be ready and expecting your patient’s arrival.
Smile
Refer to your patient by their name.
Remember your patient’s name.
Use a patient’s title if they prefer. e.g. Dr
Introduce yourself and your role at the practice.
Open and hold a door for a patient.
Walk behind your patient and show them the way.
Listen and don’t interrupt.
Say please and thank you.
Excuse yourself if you interrupt a patient.
Offer a beverage.
Offer to store their bag, coat, or umbrella.
Avoid keeping your patient waiting. Respect their time.
Let your patient know what will happen next.
Be kind and friendly.
Keep your promise.
Show empathy and patience.
Don’t cross your arms in front of your patient.
Never swear or gossip.
Never raise your voice or speak ill of anyone.
Always tell the truth.
Avoid sharing personal opinions.
Never discuss a patient in front of other patients.
Always be agreeable.
Come back from your break or lunch on time.
Pass on a message timely and accurately.
Remember your phone etiquette. Your patients are listening.
Keep the practice clean and tidy and smelling wonderful.
Respect your patient’s privacy.
Avoid turning your back on a patient.
Never ignore your patient.
Look your best for your patients.
Introduce your team in conversation.
Include your patient in conversations.
Be interested in your patient’s life.
Actively listen and pay attention.
Make eye contact when listening or speaking to your patient.
Avoid distractions while speaking with your patient.
Apologise and ask permission to answer a call when a patient is in front of you.
Farewell your patient in a professional and personal way.
Well done if you are already implementing some of these good manners.
