What is a first impression, and what does it mean?

We all make first impressions.

I may be making one right now as you read this blog.

A first impression is what you make when someone meets you for the first time or maybe even see or hear you for the first time.

This is when people are working out whether they like you, and what they think of you.

I know it sounds very superficial, but this is how it is.

First impression can be as simple and as important as the following:

  • You were friendly
  • You had a lovely smile
  • You made them feel welcome
  • You had a kind smile

It all comes down to how you make someone feel. This is what is happening as you make that very first impression.

It can be your body language, eye contact and the type of voice you use.

Whatever you do when you make that first impression has a big impact on the other person, so you want to get it right.

That first impression you make with people often makes a lasting impression on them.

People will remember that first impression of you, whether it’s good or bad.

So why not make a lasting good first impression.

Making a good first impression at your Dental Practice plays a very important part in getting and keeping your patients.

The very first impression person to person happens when your new patients call your practice.

When your patient arrive at your practice, they meet your front office team for the first time.

Your new patient will be checking that your team sound friendly, they are smiling and make them feel welcome and comfortable at your practice.

Your New Patient will be checking out the type of comfortable chairs you have, working out if they like what you have hanging on the walls, and if your practice is clean and tidy.

Your New Patient is judging you based solely on what they see and sometimes hear and smell!

Also think about how your New Patient found you in the first place.

They may have been referred by their family or friend who told them how wonderful you are. This is all part of your patient’s very first impression of you, even though they have not met you yet!

Your new patient may have googled a dentist close to them and found you. Something got their attention and attracted them to you. This is all a first impression of you.

Make sure you get it right when you are creating a great first impression on your website and social media.

Avoid the following:

  • Images of empty dental chairs. People are attracted to images of people so have people in the dental chairs. This creates a first impression that your practice is the place people go to have dental treatment. People focus on people
  • Hiding your team. Show off your team where possible. You want to create a first impression that is welcoming and introduce your new patient to the people they will meet on their first visit to your practice.

Aim to make your first impression one that will make a positive and lasting impression every single time.
